Lychakiv cemetery in Lviv is a unique open-air museum. It is one of the oldest European municipal Christian cemeteries. 1786 is the year of its official foundation. Square of Lychakiv cemetery is approximately 40 hectares. Picturesque hills and parkways are the territory of the cemetery. Since 1991 Lychakiv cemetery has official status as a museum

Among thousands of single graves, family graves, chapels there are a lot of graves of the military, political prisoners,  and of fighters for freedom of Ukraine. In the territory of the cemetery there are graves of modern Heroes - participants of the Anti-Terrorist Operation  (ATO) and the Joint Forces Operation (OOS), participants of the Revolution of Dignity, Memorials of soldiers of the Ukrainian Galician Army and soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army are situated.

Lychakiv military cemetery (so called Field of Mars), The Hill of Glory and Polish military graves of the period of 1918-1920 also belong to Lychakiv Cemetery.

In the territory of the Lychakiv cemetery a significant amount of work is being done annually. Since 2008 the directorate of the museum has been cooperating with Lviv City Council for the Protection of the Historic Environment within the framework of the Ukrainian-Polish project “Common cultural heritage preservation” and Institute ”Polonika”.

Current rehabilitation is done in general for funds from economic activity. Annually monuments in a critical condition are lifted, leveled and mounted, gravestones on the found burial places are mounted, alleys and pathways are paved with setts, benches for the museum visitors are installed, territory is landscaped, etc.

Restoration works are also done for sponsorship funds. Сo-operation with public organizations, professional and national societies of Ukraine are established.
